Box Hack #19

This hack lets a person share what’s inside the box without exposing a spectator to the perceived danger of the object inside.

Materials Needed include:

  • · Wood box with mesh lid with dimensions 3-1/8” x 2-3/8” x 2-1/2” (manufactured by Darice and available at craft stores)
  • · Picture frame (2x3”) with glass cover, available from Dollar Tree
  • · A fireplace matchstick

The other items you’ll need that may already be on your shelf are wood glue, some glass adhesive and stain.

Remove the mesh screen from wood box lid. Run the Exacto knife along the joint between the top and side then push out the mesh.  Use the knife to removep any loose mesh screen ends as best you can.

Apply small amounts of glass adhesive close to the edge of the glass. The idea is not to saturate it but provide a way to secure the glass until the matchsticks are in place.

Stain the matchstick to match the box.  Measure and cut 4 pieces to the width and length of the inside of the lid.  These four pieces will be glued to the sides of the lid to hold the glass in place.

Carefully apply a thin amount of wood glue to the matchstick pieces, then place them along the perimeter of the lid.  They should fit snugly because you measured them. The glue should set within 30 minutes. Remove any dried glue that detracts from the look.

Age the hardware before re-attaching it to the box.  I replace the hinges with limited motion hinges which prevents the box lid from opening any further than vertical. When you’re done, you’ll have a fine-looking specimen box . I’ve added a metal label holder to mine.

Some people don’t have the time or inclination to complete these steps.  For them, there is Thaumysta Magic Company’s Curiotorium on Etsy ( —and yes it is case sensitive.) where you can buy the empty specimen box for $14.95, postpaid or include an actual specimen such as a scorpion or dung beetle or a label for a few dollars extra.
